Getting To Know The Key Components Of An Airless Sprayer

2024/02/28

Understanding how an airless sprayer works and its key components is important for properly operating and maintaining the tool. We’ll go over the critical parts of an airless paint spray gun and how they function together to provide a fine, high pressure spray.

The Power Source

The driving force behind airless sprayers is an electric, gas or compressed air motor. Electric motors offer consistent power and are easy to control speed with a variable speed trigger. They require an outlet access or generator. Gas engines offer maximum portability for remote outdoor jobs. Compressed air models harness the power of an external air compressor and air hose. Consider your needs, if you'll primarily use an airless sprayer indoors or have ready access to power outlets, an electric model makes the most sense.

Most consumer-grade airless sprayers will have a 1/2 to 3 horsepower electric motor, while professional models go up to gas engines over 5 HP. The more power, the higher pressure generation and greater spray capacity before slowing down.

The Pump

The pump takes in paint and pushes it at high pressures of up to 3,000 PSI out the spray nozzle. Most pumps are made of stainless steel or hardened alloy for durability against wear and corrosion.

For spraying lighter viscosity paints, an aluminum pump paired with hardened fluid parts will suffice. Larger, more expensive rigs will feature a chromium-plated brass pump and valving able to spray heavy coatings.

There are two pump designs - direct drive and belt drive. Direct drive attaches the motor directly to the pump to transfer full rotational force. Belt drive connects the two with a belt pulley allowing each component to be independently serviced.

The Suction Tube and Paint Filter

The suction tube is where paint enters from the supply vessel into the pump. It can be placed directly into a can or paired with a pickup tube to draw from larger reserves. At minimum you'll find a filter screen on the pump inlet and another on the spray gun itself. A mesh filter screen catches solids or skin clumps from ruining the spray pattern or clogging valves.

Quick disconnect fittings make it fast to change between multiple paint pots so you spend more time spraying. If spraying solvent paints, switching to a solvent-resistant suction set prevents pump damage. An intake valve opens and closes to control fluid entering the pump piston chamber.

The Spray Gun and Nozzle

This handheld component receives paint from the hose and projects the fan pattern onto surfaces with a trigger control. Durability focuses on the wetted parts - fluid section, guards and handle. Brass offers corrosion resistance for water-based paints, while stainless steel handles solvents.

The nozzle and fluid tip shape the spray pattern and flow output. They should match the rig’s pressure capabilities and paint viscosity. Reversible tips provide different fan patterns while size adjustment controls the spray’s maximum flow between 0.3 to 1 gallons per minute. Larger tips require more engine power to prevent flow weakening.

Nozzles wear over time, distorting the pattern. Most nozzles have lifetime usage thresholds between 50 to 100 gallons pumped requiring a replacement to restore finesse. Separate nozzle kits extend capabilities for specialty coatings or tricky surfaces needing specific spray shapes.
